Library Workers United is a rank-and-file union seeking to organize public library workers across North Carolina. We are a directly democratic organization where all of our members have equal input in our goals and strategies, regardless of job classification, tenure, seniority, or degree. Our goal is to improve working conditions for library workers, ultimately improving our ability to serve our communities. We believe in the collective power of library workers and know the best way to achieve our goals is by acting together. As frontline workers, we are the ones who make the library run day-to-day, and we are the ones with the unique perspective and expertise to improve our libraries!

Workplace Democracy: Direct staff input in library decision-making, such as policy and budget decisions. Giving frontline workers a voice on the job that goes beyond an advisory role.

Funding and Resources: Proper funding and staffing for libraries and library workers. This includes staff pay and benefits, and also funding to properly maintain, expand, and update library services. Rank-and-file workers should have direct input in how library funds are allocated.

Solidarity, Support, and Internationalism: As members of a union, we look out for each other and support each other during hard times. Our union aims to support coworkers within our library system, workers from other library systems, and to support workers organizing in other fields. The labor movement is a global movement, and our alliances should stretch across all industries and borders.

A Union For All Library Workers: All public sector library workers have an important role to play in the fight for our rights and workplaces. Regardless of job classification, all rank-and-file library workers have an equal say in the running of our union.

A Workplace For All People: The library should be a welcoming and safe place to work for everyone, no matter their race, gender, sex, cultural background, religious beliefs, age, or ability.
